Name: Special Interest Group on Internet Enabling Technologies ("SIGWEB") of the Jamaica Computer Society (JCS).
Scope:

To explore the internet's enabling technologies, their design, and implementation.The SIG's scope does not cover the internet's communications technologies. The SIG will not focus or be confined to any vendors products or technology.

Objectives

To establish a knowledge base of internet enabling technologies.
To use the acquired knowledge to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of those technologies
To disseminate such information gathered to SIG members and other JCS members.
To disseminate such information to the industry as a whole through the publication of white papers, reports, researched documents, etc.
To encourage the continuing proliferation of ICT practioners in this area by establishing a close working relationship with degree granting tertiary institutions.
To create new technologies that will give Jamaica competitive advantages through their use.
To provide a forum for the exchange of information and ideas regarding best practices for using these technologies.
To provide the JCS leadership with the guidance needed to influence government policy on the use of the Internet.

Composition and Structure

SIGWEB will consist of:
Members of the JCS(all classes)
Non-members of the JCS
Students from accredited tertiary institutions
 

An executive committee will lead it, with a chairman as head. Interested persons may join SIGWEB by registering through the JCS and completing the prescribed registration process.

The committee will consist of:
Chairman
Deputy chairman
Secretary / Treasurer
Two (other) members of SIGWEB and/or sub committee chairmen.
 

Initially the membership committee acting on behalf and with the advise of council will appoint an executive committee for the first year of SIGWEB's operations.

Thereafter elections to fill the individual posts on the executive committee will be held annually on the anniversary or at the meeting immediately after the anniversary of the forming of SIGWEB.

Voting for each post will be by single ballot and decided by a simple majority.

Individuals may serve up to three (3) successive terms, on the executive committee.

The following are eligible to vote:
all SIGWEB registered members, who are members(any class) of the JCS
students from any accredited tertiary institution, who are registered members of SIGWEB.
persons deemed eligible by the JCS council
 

The JCS Council retains the right to terminate the operations of SIGWEB's at its discretion.

At the executive committee's discretion, sub-committees may be formed to carry out specific functions in fulfillment of SIGWEB's objectives.

All Sub-committees will report directly into SIGWEB's executive committee.
Chairmen of sub-committees will be appointed by SIGWEB's executive committee.

SIGWEB will meet periodically or at least once per quarter to review and plan for its activities, pursuant to its objectives.

Meetings of SIGWEB's sub-committees will be held at the discretion of the sub-committee chairmen and its members.

Responsibility

  1. Publish a quarterly newsletter, preferably electronically.
  2. This newsletter will include:

    • SIGWEB's plans and activities for the coming quarter.
    • The outcome of the activities in the quarter just completed.
    • Sub-committee reports.
    • Notification of upcoming activities for SIGWEB and the JCS.

  3. Presents its achievements at least once per year to the JCS membership and the general public.

  4. Provide the JCS council with technical advice on matters within its domain.

  5. Encourage the proliferation of expertise in this area by establishing close working relationships with students in accredited tertiary institutions.

SIGWEB's funding will be provided through:
SIGWEB's fund raising efforts
Sponsorship
Knowledge transfer events
Budgeted assistance from the JCS
 

SIGWEB's Relationship with JCS

SIGWEB is a sub-committee of the JCS's membership committee.

The chairman of SIGWEB sits on the membership committee and must be a full member of the JCS. All members of the executive committee must be JCS members.

The membership committee is a standing committee of the JCS council. Its chairman is an elected member of the JCS council
