3. Building & Securing Customized Wireless Applications
As businesses worldwide begin to embrace wireless technology as the next “must do”, practitioners must be made aware that implementing an effective wireless system is not as simple as adapting Web site content to a small screen. It requires an entirely new computing paradigm. This session deals with the multiple issues to be considered when building a wireless system, including: the overall architecture and how it ties into legacy systems; features and capabilities; specific system components; procedures for installation; integration; security and ongoing management of the system.
The primary challenge is that a fully functional wireless system must be capable of providing services across a constantly increasing number of different kinds of wireless network and device types, each with their own operating systems, functionality and user interface requirements. Additional challenges include integration, security and ongoing maintenance. In fact, mobile commerce technology requires an entirely new computing paradigm that can overcome these challenges and, at the same time, provide a robust, multi-functional system that offers all the features and benefits that wireless device users are beginning to demand.
One hurdle that threatens the introduction of new services on future wireless networks is the lack of thorough and well-defined security solutions that meet the challenges posed by wireless networks. An integrated approach to security development, which considers both network and application specific issues, is critical to facilitating the ultimate deployment of a secure, pervasive computing infrastructure.
This tutorial will equip persons to answer the following questions:
- What are innovative ways consumers are using wireless applications today?
- How are the ways consumers use wireless applications changing?
- How are evolutions in devices facilitating what consumers can do with wireless applications?
- Necessary Functions and Features of a Wireless System

7. The role of IT in Business Process Re-engineering
“Reengineering is the fundamentalrethinking and radical redesign of business processesto achieve dramatic improvements in critical, contemporary measures of performance such as cost, quality, service and speed “ Hammer,M., Champy.J., (1993), Reengineering the Corporation: A Manifesto for Business Revolution.
“Business activities should be viewed as more than a collection of individual or even functional tasks: in a process view for maximizing effectiveness. IT and BPR have recursive relationship. IT capabilities should support business processes, and business processes should be in terms of the capabilities IT can provide.” Davenport, T.H. & Short, J.E. (1990 Summer). "The New Industrial Engineering: Information Technology and Business Process Redesign," Sloan Management Review, pp. 11-27.
The tutorial examines a six step model of BPR and the ways in which IT can be invoked for each step:
- Developing the Business vision and process objectives
- Identifying the business processes to be re-engineered
- Understanding and measuring the existing processes
- Designing & Building prototypes of the new processes
- Implement re-engineered processes
- Adapting the organization structure and governance model towards the newly designed processes
